The complete SEO starter guide for 2026

SEO in 2026 is less about tricks and more about being the clearest, fastest, most helpful answer for a specific query. AI Overviews compress the SERP; local pack results have never mattered more; and Google's Helpful Content system quietly deranks anything that reads like it was written to please a robot. Here is the shortest realistic path to your first 1,000 organic visitors.

1. Pick 10 real questions

Start from questions your customers actually type. Use Google's People Also Ask, Reddit, and sales emails. Every page should map 1:1 to a single question a buyer asks the day before they contact you.

  • Head term + question modifier
  • Buyer intent > raw volume
  • One question per page — never bundle

2. Answer above the fold

Put the direct answer in the first 80 words. Then support it with proof, examples, and internal links. AI Overviews cite pages that answer clearly — and skip walls of intro fluff.

3. Fix the technical basics

Core Web Vitals, unique title/meta per page, one H1, alt text, sitemap, canonicals. That's 80% of technical SEO. The other 20% is fixing crawl waste with a proper robots.txt and internal-link hygiene.

  • LCP under 2.5s
  • No layout shift
  • Mobile-first design
  • One H1, semantic headings

4. Own your Google Business Profile

For local businesses this is 40% of the game. Complete every field, add photos weekly, respond to every review within 24 hours, and post updates. The local pack is a review-count race — and reviews compound.

5. Build topical authority, not random posts

Pick one topic cluster and dominate it. Write a pillar page + 8–12 supporting articles that answer every question a buyer might have. Interlink them tightly. Google rewards demonstrated depth on a topic more than sitewide DR alone.

6. Earn one link per week

Guest posts, podcasts, tool listings, HARO/Connectively, expert quotes. Consistency beats volume. 52 real editorial links a year outperform any PBN or purchased 'guest post network' — and won't get you a manual penalty.

7. Refresh, don't republish

Update your top 20 pages every quarter. A 12-month-old post refreshed today ranks better than a brand-new one 80% of the time. Change the date only when you meaningfully rewrote it — otherwise Search Console shows the click-through-rate drop.

8. Track what moves revenue

Traffic is a vanity chart. Track qualified organic leads and revenue by landing page. When those diverge from traffic, follow the money — always.
